What is the Indian Ocean?

Today we talked about review and then moved on to Letter X (criss cross, X marks the Spot), Writing numbers 1 and 2. She gets stuck on number 2. Around and then down, straight across. She gets messed up on Straight Across. Then we talked about germs and Oceans. Which leads me to Indian Ocean. When asked what The Indian Ocean is, she replied "its where Indians swim, theres dolphins and turtles are" I believe she also said there are mermaids.

Last week we were suppose to talk about teeth. Well we did but in the ER because Candice fell and knocked her front tooth out.

After 5 weeks off

We have been on break due to myself. I just lost the motivation. I am back and we are back again schooling. Today we covered Positioning in Math. Up/Down/Next to. I had Candice do a worksheet and then i gave her animals and asked her to position them. She did really well. She has a bit of trouble with Above, but knows up/over. I need more worksheets on this- If you know of any, let me know!

Then we did a review of all Letters and focused on V and W. She forgot V and knew W but needed to practice writing small W's.

Then we did letter writing in rice, until she broke the bag of rice and spilled it. I think we need to come up with something new.

Then we talked about Teeth. Good Teeth habits and Bad, what Teeth are, how many and what kind. She seemed to really like talking about them.

and finally we covered Continents. Which she seems to have trouble understanding the broader concepts, that our house, our town, out city is on the continent of North America. She knows we live in the USA though. I had her color the continents to try and understand. I need more worksheets on this too.

and thats the start of the week. Theres really no way to catch up 5 weeks sadly, but we'll be ok. We just need to keep at it. Library Class starts again this week so she'll enjoy that.

Bible Every Day for me and them

Recently I went to the local Goodwill and came across a GREAT Children's Bible. Not the cartoon-toddler type, but more of the semi detailed young child version. It breaks down the memory verse and the story. It also has a lesson for every day. A whole year. Starting today we are going to have family "bible time" after dinner. We will read the bible, look at the memory verse (attempt to memorize it) and talk about the lesson. I am hoping by the end of 2011, Candice and Lana will have a better understanding of the bible, God and what its like to have God in your life. I think we, as christian adults, forget these basics. We have them in our memories but never go back and really re-learn them. I can spout out Adam and Eve til Im blue in the face, but do I really remember? Do I really understand? Today is day 1.

Monday, we are starting school back up. We're behind, but then again, thats a normal thing in this family. We run on Alexander Time.

Homeschool/Christmas Time

It''s beginning to look a lot like Homeschool
Everywhere I go.
Take a look in the house and den, filling up with bins
of Living Books and little eyes aglow.
It's beginning to look a lot like Homeschool,
Books in every space,
but the happiest sight to see is the smile that will be
on the young one's face!
A map upon the wall and a globe just like a ball
is the wish of Mom and Dad,
Time just to be, and a feeling so free,
is the hope of one small lad.
Sleep so well tonight, so school can come again!
It's beginning to look a lot like Homeschool
everywhere I turn.
There's a journal open here, and writing without fear,
a chance for a kid to really love to learn!
It's beginning to look a lot like Homeschool.
Soon, the work will start.
And the thing that will make it fun, is the learning that's begun
right within your heart.

finishing, new group and new week

We finished last weeks lessons with a bang. Then we have moved onto this weeks. This week should be easy for Candice. Yesterday we introduced everything- Shapes, Letter V, Exercise, Hanukkah and Colonies. Today we are working on more of the same but i pulled out our Menorah and Dreidel and will work more on Colonies. She also has a bit of trouble writing V. She makes it more of a U. Though she understands its a V and not a U. Lana did lessons yesterday too- Play Doh, Dominoes and Letters.
And as far as a new group. I must be crazy. I have to be picky. Maybe I am seeking this perfect Homeschool group for Candice and I and its just not out there. CHEC, Im sorry but it was a waste. The Milford Group was a joke- Social Hour for the moms. Then Mt Orab was better, Candice LOVED it! However, it was mostly for older kids. I was paying $2 (plus gas and time) for Candice to paint with other kids. She couldnt do music because she wasnt in 3rd grade. Plus the 1 day we actually stayed for lunch, no one sat next to us. Now, maybe I am being picky or judgmental- which im really trying not to be anymore, but why cant we find a good mix? I looked around today and found HSN of Cincinnati. I like they have activities a lot, in fact, every Monday. I called the Kentucky Group and Ohio. The women- Benita and Jill are super sweet. I told them Im looking for LLL (La Leche League) and Activites combined. They led to me to believe this is what they are. PLUS- its only $5 to join! Thats pretty good if you ask me. I made sure to ask if there are other Kindergardeners as well. I have to send in the $5 and then wait 5 weeks. Not bad.
THEN someone on Homeschool Lounge, Sandi, recommended maybe MOPS. (moms of preschoolers) and then told me they have MOMSnext (moms of school aged kids). I called/emailed and Im waiting on an email/call back. They meet in Milford, so thats good. The problem is that they are sort of pricey- $50-$70. I have a feeling they may not work out- just because of my experience with "Moms clubs"- its like Milford CHEC, Social Hour. However, I have heard good things about MOPS. Plus, its not about me- its about Candice.

Equal to T and good food

Today Candice had to sort 2 groups of things and make them equal. She has a bit of trouble if the things dont look alike but she is catching on. Then we worked more on the letter T. We did a Turtle worksheet and she found all of the hidden letter Ts and all the words/pictures that started with T. We then got the magnet letters and made some T words- Turtle, Letters, Plate. After we talked more about good foods and I had her take pictures of good and bad foods and put them on a plate, then she had to tell me if they were good or bad. We skipped History today. Candice also went to her Library class and she learned about a Lion.
